FAQ

SUPER-JUDGED PHOTO CONTESTS

Q: Are Super-Judged contests free to enter?
A: The 2012 Super-Judged contests were free, but we are now experimenting with paid-entry S-J contests. They will be clearly identified.

Q: Why are they called “Super-Judged”?
A: Because we sometimes have two rounds of judging for each contest, and also because some of our head judges are legendary photographers. Hence the term: “super-judged” (which we think is kinda cool).

Q: What are the judging criteria?
A: The normal ones used for judging photo contests:

– appropriateness for contest theme

– originality and creativity

– photo technique and/or quality

– overall impact and artistic merit
*** PLUS any additional criteria the head judge may have for a specific contest.

Q: Is the judging based on Photos or Photographers or what exactly?
A: It’s the individual images submitted that are being judged. And as singular images, not as a group. It’s the individual images that count, not the photographer nor the photographer’s grouping of the images. However, to spread the love, each winning photographer-submitter will be unique for any contest (i.e., you only show up once in any one contest).

Q: How do I submit my photos?
A: Easy. Just click on any link or button that says “Submit Your Photo” or “Submit Photo,” and it will take you to the page for uploading your photos (or to the payment process if it’s a paid-entry contest).

Q: What are the image-uploading specs or requirements?
A: Here is the key statement from the Submissions Guidelines that are visible every time you submit an image: “Approved file formats are: .jpg, .png, and .gif. Maximum total file size of each photo is limited to 2 MB, with the longest-side dimension limited to 1200 pixels. (There is no minimum file size although images smaller than 540 pixels on their longest side may show a loss of quality when displayed.)” If you submit photos much larger you’ll get an error message, or you’ll see that your images did not upload.

Q: What if my images are too big and won’t upload? What do I do?
A. You’ll need to reduce them in either file size or pixel dimensions or both. There are plenty of software applications (some expensive, some free) that will help you do this. Just search the web for them. It’s something you should learn how to do, in any case.

Q: Why won’t my image upload correctly?

A: On the Submit Photo page, be sure to: (1) fill in all fields, (2) not have Titles that are super long, (3) not have unusual symbols in any of the fields or in the file name, and (4) double-check the image specifications above. Then try again. If it still doesn’t work, email us for assistance at: info [at] phoozl [dot] com.

Q: I use photo-sharing sites (Flickr, PhotoBucket, etc.) for housing my photos and want to submit from those sites. Can I?

A: At the moment, for Contests and Assignments, no. But we’re working on it. In the Phorums, you should be able to copy and paste the correct “sharing” HTML URL in your message. For Flickr, it’s the “Grab the HTML” option after the img src=. For Photobucket, it’s the “Direct Link” line. Other sites are similar, although you may need to experiment.

Q: Do photos have to be taken with a digital camera? How about cell phone cameras?
A: Any kind of camera is fine as long as the end result is a JPG, GIF, or PNG file and that meets the other submission requirements. You can even use scans of films or prints.

Q: Must new photos be taken, or can I submit something from my archives?
A: Each contest rules are different. Check the Contest Summary about this.

Q: Is image manipulation allowed in this contest?
A: Each contest rules are different. Check the Contest Summary about this.

Q: How many photos can I submit?
A: Each contest rules are different. Check the Contest Summary about this.

Q: I’d like to enter a photo that has previously been published or has won a contest. Is that allowed?
A: Outside of PhoozL, yes it is. The only restriction is that you may not enter an image that has already been determined a winner (or honorable mention) in a contest here on PhoozL. We encourage you to spread your creative wings!

Q: Are professional photographers allowed to submit?

A: Yes they are. This contest is for logged-in PhoozL members, which means amateurs, professionals, and anyone who’s passionate about photography!

Q: What if my photos are on the “blue” or “risqué” side?
A: This is a “family-type” activity so please, no images that are sexually explicit/indecent/pornographic; that incite or contain graphic or gratuitous violence; or that promote bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual. Please read the full description about these content limits on the official Rules page.

Q: What about my image rights? What’s your policy?
A: We are very aware of this issue and have structured image rights and usage with photographers in mind. Here’s our official statement that you can see at the bottom of every page on the site: “You retain the rights (including copyright) to your photographs. Period. However, by submitting or uploading images here, including entering contests/assignments, you grant PhoozL a NON-EXCLUSIVE, royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide license to reproduce and display your submissions, and any related content submitted by you, in connection with the contests and/or this site, including publication highlighting contest entries or winners.” So we’re only asking to have access to images as it relates to the contest or assignment or whatever the images were submitted for.

Q: When and where will the winners be announced?
A: It usually takes a few days or a week or more after the submission period ends while the judges do their thing. Then the results will be announced on the site in the obvious places.

WEEKLY PHOTO CONTESTS – “Weekly Wednesdays”

Q: If these are weekly, when does the week start and end?
A: Typically, each contest begins and ends on a Wednesday. That’s the reason for the nickname: “Weekly Wednesdays.” The countdown clock will give the specific time left to submit, or there will be special instructions. We might extend a contest for holidays or other circumstances, but you’ll be warned.

Q: What are the judging criteria?
A: The normal ones used for judging photo contests:

– appropriateness for contest theme

– originality and creativity

– photo technique and/or quality

– overall impact and artistic merit
*** PLUS any additional criteria the judge may have for a specific contest.

Q: How about prizes?
A: Beyond glory and admiration of your peers, there are custom icons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners PER WEEK. Plus all winners are shown in the Winners Showcase and qualify you for the PhoozL Points system. Overall PhoozL Points Winners will be recognized after the end of each year (or earlier if we feel like it!).

Q: So these contests qualify for Winners Showcases and PhoozL Points?
A: Absolutely yes!

Q: Are there other rules or instructions for these Weekly Wednesday photo contests?
A: Yes. Each contest has a list of “More Instructions & Rules” on its main Information or Summary page. Those are your basic guidelines for that specific contest.

EXTENDED-WEEKLY PHOTO CONTESTS – Cash Prize Pools

Q: What does “extended-weekly” mean?
A: It means longer than one week, but typically starting and ending on the same day of the week, like Monday to Monday. These contests could have a duration of two, three, or four weeks (or more).

Q: So these are PAID-entry contests?
A: Yes. That’s what creates the Cash Prize Pool.

Q: And exactly what is a Cash Prize Pool?
A: It means a “progressive” (growing) cash prize pool paid out to Winners based on the accumulated entry fees paid in. Cool, huh? XX percent of the total entry proceeds* are paid out to the First Place winner, YY percent to Second Place, and ZZ percent to Third Place. Each contest will specify what the percentages are, but at least one-half or more of the entry proceeds are paid out to the Winners.
*after required PayPal fees are deducted

Q: Do I need a PayPal account to enter or win the cash?
A: PayPal or credit/debit cards (“buy as a guest”) are accepted for entries so you do not need a PayPal account to pay for submissions, but you DO to accept any cash winnings. Also, PayPal has certain restrictions on making payments from certain countries.

Q: What happens if I win but cannot accept the cash prize purse?
A: Any winners not accepting cash payouts will still retain their winner placings, award icons, and PhoozL Points.

Q: Same judging criteria?
A: Yep:

– appropriateness for contest theme

– originality and creativity

– photo technique and/or quality

– overall impact and artistic merit
PLUS any additional criteria the judge may have for a specific contest.

Q: And these contests qualify for Winners Showcases and PhoozL Points?
A: Yep!

Q: Are there other rules or instructions for these Extended Weekly photo contests?
A: Yes. Each contest has a list of “More Instructions & Rules” on its main Information or Summary page. Those are your basic guidelines for that specific contest.

PHOTO ASSIGNMENTS (Sporadic)

NOTE: All the Q&As above apply here, too.

Q: Are these real assignments or what?
A: Real enough. They are presented to you by real photographers, editors, art directors, publishers, etc. But they’re fanciful What-Ifs. That doesn’t make them any less challenging or beneficial. Take on the challenge of the Assignments and give them all you’ve got.
(And our lawyer says we have to say this: All assignments are fanciful and brought to you exclusively by PhoozL. All names, tasks, companies, publications, and websites are fictitious other than as part of the PhoozL experience. But the Assigners are real, you are real, and the submission process is real.)

Q: So what are the prizes?
A: Isn’t satisfaction for a job well done enough? :) Add to that a bit of glory and bragging rights. And the admiration of your peers. Plus cool icons for the winners to post and display. And sometimes, an Assigner may offer a special prize in addition. You never know.

INSTA ALPHABETOGRAPHY A-Z contest (COMPLETED – 2012)

Q: Do I have to use Instagram to upload photos?
A: Yes. But…

Q: Do I have to use a mobile phone to capture images or can I use my existing photo files?
A: All you have to do is use Instagram to *upload* the images to your Instagram account (and hashtag them with each letter’s special hashtag). How you get them to your mobile device or camera roll is your business.

Q: What hashtag do I use?
A: The special one that’s given for each letter. The one that’s glowing in green on the main Alphabetography A-Z contest page.

Q: What does “associated with the letter” mean?
A. It means that you can either take a picture of something that looks like that letter, but even cooler is to submit an image whose subject starts with the active letter, e.g., a picture of beer for the letter “B”. This can get very creative!

Q: How many photos can I submit?
A: As many as you want as long as the Active Letter is live.

Q: Archived or new images?
A: Either/or.

Q: Are professional photos allowed to submit?
A: Yep. Amateurs, pros, and anyone in between.

Q: Where and when are Winners announced?
A: Each “letter period” winner will be announced both on this site and uploaded via Instagram.

Q: Are there prizes?
A: Beyond the glory and recognition, not normally. But we’ll see about adding some from time to time.

Q: Do these contests qualify for Winners Showcases and PhoozL Points?
A: Yessiree!
