What a year – and what a great photo contest season! Thousands of contest photos were submitted by hundreds of photographers and photo enthusiasts from dozens of different countries. The range of photo quality and substance was breathtaking, and the two-dozen different judges were equally impressed. Congrats to all the winners and honorable mentions, thanks to all our great judges, and we thank all who participated in PhoozL’s second contest year!
These 2013 PhoozL Awards are based on a point system by which PhoozL Points were awarded to photographers who were chosen as Winners or Honorable Mentions by the different contest judges in all the contests. 2013 PhoozL Photographer of the Year
#1 in Overall PhoozL Points: 600
Swedish photographer Mikael Sundberg was a powerhouse in the PhoozL contests over the course of 2013. He was a Top 3 or Honorable Mention in 30 of the Weekly Wednesdays contests, receiving 1st Place in 12 of those (!). And he was also judged the #1 winner in the ‘Pets in B&W’ cash-prize-pool contest. Wow. We congratulate Mikael Sundberg as our 2013 PhoozL Photographer of the Year!
Mikael is a semi-pro photographer who loves lighting and the studio, although he clearly knows what he’s doing outside of the studio as well. #2 – Overall PhoozL Points: 420
Kay is an amateur photographer who has a long personal connection to photography. After she made the switch to digital about 10 years ago, and after retiring from teaching law, Kay has been trying to “find the Artist Within.” She’s doing a pretty job of that as her many judges’ selections on PhoozL in 2013 show: she received 22 Top 3 or Honorable Mention Weekly Wednesdays selections and a 2nd Place in the Super-Judged ‘Spirit of the ‘60s’ contest.

#3 – Overall PhoozL Points: 355
Stefano is an amateur photographer who is an ophthalmic surgeon, the Chief Information Officer and the Chief for Continuous Education in the hospital where he works in Italy. After starting to enter online photo challenges, he found PhoozL in mid-2013 where: “It was awesome, not only for my results, but for the fact that professionals were judging our photos and commenting on their choices.” Even with his late start, Stefano received 24 Top 3 or Honorable Mention wins in the Weekly contests, including one 1st place and also 3rd Place in the ‘Beauty’ contest.

Charlena Cavender (Charlena)
Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
#4 – Overall PhoozL Points: 290
Charlena is a semi-pro photographer who shoots just about everything except wildlife: weddings, family sittings, seniors, events, pets, landscapes, street photography, and more. She has been seriously photographing since 2009 and says: “I started in photography because I love to capture fleeting moments in life and time.” Charlena won judges’ selections for Top 3 or Honorable Mention in 16 Weekly contests (1st Place in one), and she was the grand-prize winner of the ‘Spirit of the ‘60s’ Super-Judged contest.

Lesley is a semi-pro photographer who took up photography in 2007 to document all the traveling she was doing. It soon became a passion, and she now enjoys doing all types of photography including nature, architecture, and abstract. Her goal is to present an artistic, unique perspective of her subjects. She is a member of a local camera club, and she also looks to the Internet for programs such as PhoozL to educate and inspire her. She received 14 Top 3 or Honorable Mention wins in the Weekly contests (with three as 1st Place), and she was the 2nd Place winner of the ‘Beauty’ contest.

Armineh Hovanesian (Armineh)
Glendale, California USA
#7 – Overall PhoozL Points: 185
Armineh is an amateur photographer who’s mostly into mobile and is now based in Los Angeles after growing up in Tehran and Boston. With no professional training her vision has been the driving force behind her creations. Armineh has received numerous accolades and awards for her photography, and she received 13 Top 3 or Honorable Mention Weekly Wednesdays selections with a 1st Place in the ‘The Elements: Air’ contest.

Leka is a semi-pro photographer who graduated in Creative Photography in Humber College, Toronto, Canada, during 90′s. Now living in Hong Kong, he continues to love beautiful images. Leka received 14 Top 3 or Honorable Mention Weekly Wednesdays selections with a 1st Place in ‘The Story’ contest.

Sandra Angers-Blondin (Sandra A.-B.)
#9 – Overall PhoozL Points: 170
Sandra is an amateur photographer whose photography reflects her passion for nature. She also enjoys traveling, and some of her travel photos are on tour with The Photographic Angle’s exhibitions in the UK. Sandra received 12 wins for Weekly PhoozL contests but she had to take a break to work on a Masters degree.

Don is a pro photographer who came to PhoozL late in the year, but he quickly made up lost ground with several impressive Top 3 or Honorable Mention Weekly Wednesdays judges’ selections. He is hired regularly to photograph special services at Arlington National Cemetery, and he also shoots a variety of subjects from people to events to time-lapse nature.
