Our third “super-judged” photo contest again showed a wonderful range of image submissions and interpretations of the contest theme. A big Thank You goes to our head judge, professional photographer Margo Taussig Pinkerton (and her husband Arnie), who had this to say about this contest…

“This was a very strong showing, and there were a number of entries that were worthy, but with a limit of three top picks and six honorable mentions, one has to make choices. My husband/partner, Arnie (Arnold Zann), and I judged this. We work together helping photographers seek their own vision and create stronger photographs in our workshops (Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures). We judged these based on what we viewed as a personal connection between the photographer and his/her subject. Not just another pretty postcard, but one that was interpretive rather than a recording. We are interested in passion and vision over straight technique. We were also looking for unusual views, ones we have not seen before or ones that were done in a way that was different and unusual.”

Grand Prize (1st Place Overall)
“Mourning”
by zarnoosheh
Judge’s Comment: “We found this image to be intriguing. The eye is kept roaming around the photograph, finding new elements and surprises, but always returning to the central character. There is a really strong feeling of being one of the mourners, of being part of the ceremony.”

(NOTE: the Grand Prize is a very special, 1:1 communication with judge Margo Taussig Pinkerton about this winner’s photographic work. Winner also receives a custom icon for posting on sites and blogs.)

2nd Place Overall
“Lady in Red”
by Matt Heffernan
Judge’s Comment: “This image is full of motion and the feeling of a bustling city street. We found the use of bold color to be really strong in this photograph, and the less-common, angled view adds tension to the image.”

(The 2nd Place Prize is a free book voucher from Course Technology PTR from their great Digital Photography & Video book category. Winner also receives a custom icon for posting on sites and blogs.)

3rd Place Overall
“Mystical Baobab Alley”
by Sandra A.-B.
Judge’s Comment: “We think there is exceptionally strong composition in this photograph. What makes the photo unusual and compelling is the body language of the boys against the dust. The dust to us is critical to the success of this image.”
