RESULTS – ‘Solo’- PhoozL

RESULTS – ‘Solo’

Posted by

For the third “grouping” theme category, we narrowed it down to ‘Solo.’ Our dual judges Richard and Abigail Marks comment:

“There were some wonderful images in this competition. Although the assignment included multidimensional instruction wording, we were hoping to see more images that focused on the unique aspect of a solo subject rather than just its isolation. Many of the images were striking, but they were mostly focused on one subject rather than encompassing a subject that stood out from everything around it. While the photographer’s choice to take a photo in the first place is many times the decision that the subject of the photo is more interesting than those things that surround it, we would have liked seeing more of that dichotomy within the images.

“The contest instructions also said: ‘Think hard and go beyond the mundane or the obvious.’ The idea that something is lonely merely because it is solitary is at one level, but when something can be lonely at the same time it is enjoying being unique and conquering a new frontier is at another level. Nevertheless, we had some great submissions to choose from and thank you for them.”

First Place

“Waiting for Good Times”
Judge’s Comment: Gorgeous image. We can see that this woman is in a marketplace surrounded by many people, and yet the photo allows us to see that she is in her own world. We are able to take a look at her in an unguarded and truthful moment. She is dignified, present and also somewhere else; lost in her own thoughts.

“He Will Come”
Judge’s Comment: We like the enhanced colors in this image, and we enjoy the haunting and mysterious tone set by the subject. We are left to wonder if the subject is coming, going or waiting. The twilight and the “Brigadoon-ian” fog are transient and only last as long as it took to take this photo. We like it.

“The Future…”
Judge’s Comment: We imagine someone leaving a Commencement ceremony, which evokes thoughts of both beginnings, as the word truly means, as well as endings. Having the subject walk through the rain in a field full of beautiful colors allows us to revel in both the beginning and end of the journey. The unknown future at the end of the rainbow and mourning the loss of the past in order to charter new territory both exist in this instant.

Judge’s Comment: This image is a window into an unknown world. Far from living in a glass house, this structure allows us only a peek, which piques our curiosity and preserves the mystery of the moment.

“It’s a Big World Out There”
Judge’s Comment: This image of an alien being looking into the green abyss is artistic, striking and evocative. It certainly is a big world out there for this little creature!
