RESULTS: ‘Headshot’

Long-time pro commercial and fine-art photographer Bruce Frazier approached this judging with gusto; too bad Hurricane Sandy’s direct hit got in the way. But Bruce was not to be deterred.

“Thanks to all who shared your impressions of what comprises a headshot. We had images ranging from bugs to mugs to mannequins, and around 20 quickly rose to the top of my selection process. I was looking moods and personality, and I found them! Although I didn’t chose them for this reason, the three winners each have a very different ‘look.’ The photographers really captured the character of the subjects appropriate to each of the three overall winners (and the honorable mentions). The dark gray tones and texture of the old man’s face, the light framing the fresh freckled face, and an evocative mood all suited their subjects. None feels forced or articficial. Just by looking at these faces, you can write your own narrative.” — Bruce Frazier

1st Place Overall
“Deep Thoughts”
by DragonShot12
Judge’s Comment: “The beautiful tones and textures of this photo combine with a subject that certainly has a lot of stories to tell. This is a wonderfully composed and luscious photograph.”

2nd Place Overall
“Freckle Beach”
by adamdean
Judge’s Comment: “I like the horizontal, off-center composition and the overexposed, out-of-focus background. The subject’s personality comes right through in a photo that just reads ‘beach vacation.’ Besides, I’m a sucker for freckles!”

3rd Place Overall
“A Moment of Contemplation in the Darkness”
by aaphoto2
Judge’s Comment: “A wonderful contemplative portrait with lovely lighting. And the “Orton Effect” (blurring the shadows) works well with this image. Note the muted colors with the red lips jumping out of the photo.”

Honorable Mentions

Three more great images chosen by the judge in the Honorable Mention category (click here to see the Gallery of all submitted images)…

“Stella in the Studio”
by Mikael Sundberg
Judge’s Comment: “Beautiful lighting (as were the other entries from this photographer). Really nice portrait of Stella the dog. Click in the image to see the texture and glossiness of the fur. And great composition.”

“James ‘Boogaloo’ Bolden”
by Talya Arbisser
Judge’s Comment: “Lots of personality here with nice lighting. I also like the vignetting of the corners, and the blue tone is so appropriate for the blues music of the BB King Band.”

“Hey!”
by jlammens
Judge’s Comment: “Not what I would normally consider a classic headshot, but there is something about the camera angle and the subject’s expression that really grabbed me. Plus the blue and cyan combo is a nice touch.”

PhoozL thanks ALL the photographers who participated and a HUGE thanks to this week’s judge, Bruce Frazier, who sat in the cold and dark, without electricity mostly, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, to do the judging. Talk about photo dedication! Congratulations to all of you for submitting tremendous images. And keep an eye on the next “Weekly Wednesdays” contests!
