RESULTS – ‘Foodtography’

The judge was very impressed by the submissions to the ‘Foodtography’ photo contest. Here’s what she (Christina Bording) says, including some foodtography tips:

“I was genuinely surprised at the general quality of the photos submitted. There were some very professional photos this time, and it was hard to pick only the few winners you see. And I found myself very hungry and almost licking the screen after judging this competition :) . I congratulate all the photographers who submitted.

“Having been involved in food photography for a while, here are three quick tips for your future Foodtography:

1. HEROS. Ask yourself upfront: ‘What is the hero of the dish?’ Make sure the hero is your focus and that you enhance it with both focus and lighting.

2. LIGHTING. In many cases, food is lit slightly from behind, as this is a good way to get great reflections from the food itself (or the surface it sits on). Experiment by moving the food (or light sources) to get perfect reflections.

3. WHITE BALANCE: Make sure you have the correct white balance when doing the shot. I prefer “natural” light or lamps with the same light temperature as natural daylight. Other light sources can taint the colors in the food and make it look unappealing. You need to balance the light source to the camera’s white balance setting.”

1st Place Overall
“Sushi”
by Mikael Sundberg
Judge’s Comment: The photo has a very bold composition, is expertly lit and has a really nice black-surface reflection. The photographer has placed the focus perfectly on the hero of the dish and made sure that the lighting emphasizes that focus.

2nd Place Overall
“Red Velvet”
by HerThirdEye
Judge’s Comment: Although a bit messy and slightly tilting, this photo does exactly what food photography is supposed to do: it gives you very sensory thoughts about how moist the cake is and just how good it would taste in your mouth!

3rd Place Overall
“BBQ Beef Stick”
by leka huie
Judge’s Comment: This is a bit psychedelic for food photography, but I think it works brilliantly. There are some really nice reflections in the meat, the food looks delicious and colorful, and in spite of all the different colors the photographer has managed to control the white balance perfectly.

“Snowing Flour”
by Sandra A.-B.
Judge’s Comment: The photographer has managed to make a less-interesting product look interesting by using light and motion. I think there is a brilliant atmosphere in the photo, and there is something intriguing about the flour frozen in time.

“Summer Fruit”
by nance kay
Judge’s Comment: This is a professional-looking photo with very bright colors in the fruit. The photographer shows good control over lighting and reflections, and the white background is perfectly overexposed.

“Breakfast”
by saritsal
Judge’s Comment: Beautifully lit photo with some very nice reflections and brilliant colors. This is a very professional photo. To me it seems a bit tightly cropped, but apart from that it could easily be used commercially.
