Creep-crawly-flying things became beautiful with your photos. Judge Andrew Darlow comments:

“I really enjoyed judging this group of Bugs, Bees & Butterflies . So many of the photos showcased the beauty of nature and the creativity of those who photographed these critters. Although I will admit I shivered a bit as some of them appeared on the screen for the first time :) !

“As usual, it was tough to get it down to just six winners; many more were right up there in my finalist group.”

“The Fly”
Judge’s Comment: Incredible! Though a bit difficult to look at since I really dislike flies, the technical merit of this photo is undeniable, and the color (especially of the eyes and yellow parts), sharpness, lighting, cropping and deep black background are all superb.

“Geranium Bronze”
Judge’s Comment: This photo was a top pick because I was enamored by the way the photographer captured so much of the flower while still making the butterfly the star of the show. The flower almost looks as though it is floating, and the center of the flower and butterfly are very sharp, which helps direct the viewer’s eye. The color contrasts between magenta, green, and the subtle and muted butterfly all combine to make this a special image.

“Honey… I Am Coming”
Judge’s Comment: The purple-blue flower in this photo on the ethereal, watercolor-like green background would have been enough to make this a fantastic image. By adding in the sharp and well-placed bee (whether photographed as we see it or cropped later on), the photo was elevated to a whole other level of excellence.

“Tiger Butterfly”
Judge’s Comment: Though I may be dating myself, this photo reminded me of artwork one might have found on an inside double-panel album cover for a 1970’s band. I can almost hear “Hello Sunshine, Goodbye Rain,” by Simon and Garfunkel when I gaze at the beautiful interplay between the detailed butterfly and the out of focus foreground and background that complement it so well. The warm color temperature also helps to set the mood.

“Praying Mantis”
Judge’s Comment: This praying mantis made me laugh a bit thanks to its “smile,” and I was very impressed by the way in which the photographer used selective focus to draw the viewer toward the mantis’ head, allowing the rest of the image to gradually fall out of focus. The white background with pleasing shadows and darker areas all work together to make this a winner.

“South African Dung Beetle”
Judge’s Comment: “Luke, I am your Father” was the Star Wars quote that immediately crossed my mind when I saw this photo :) . This picture is so unique, interesting and amusing due to the interplay between the insect and the man that I had to choose it. I also like how sharp the beetle is in relation to the soft focus on the man and his surroundings.
